OVERVIEW     Joshua began life as the sweetest bean you can imagine. Kind, caring, thoughtful. He was born sick and suffers a life long illness, which he stubbornly ignores much to his physicker’s chagrin. However, when he was an infant he awoke as the Dominant of the Phoenix, one of 8 hosts to powerful Eikons. This means he can transform into a giant fire bird and rain fiery death down upon people. It also means he can heal people. He cannot bring people back from the dead. Being the Phoenix is not at all important and doesn’t shape the entirety of his life(lie). It’s not like his kingdom reveres the Phoenix above anything(also a lie).     Through a terrible series of events Joshua loses his family, his kingdom, and his life at the tender age of 10. Sorta. His dad got beheaded in front of him, his brother disappeared after sorta maybe killing Joshua twice, and his mother was the one who organized the coup to sell their kingdom up the river. Joshua awakens from a magic coma and spends the rest of his life searching for and protecting his older brother in his fight against God™. Most of this abuse was at the hands of his mother, but the narrative tends to portray his father in a really positive light despite his enabling and allowing this. I interpret this as Clive looking at his father with rose coloured glasses –– he is largely unwilling to give up the illusion of having at least one loving parent –– but this kind of parent/child dynamic can be tough for some people and I won't bring it up without OOC discussion. And in a much heavier vein, FFXVI's first arc is centered entirely on broad-scale, systematic slavery. In this universe, the entire continent has developed around the enslavement of magic users, and these magic users are facially branded upon discovery and considered subhuman. This world is extremely harsh and brutal: peasants complain about war making it too expensive for them to afford to keep their own slaves, slave owners regularly brutalize or kill slaves for petty reasons, and the enslaved people are so demoralized that resistance is extremely rare. Clive himself was enslaved as a teenager. He was freed almost entirely by chance circumstances after 13 years, and was promptly picked up by a liberation movement, which he now leads. So fortunately for all of us, Clive is aggressively anti-slavery, considers himself nationless, and has no interest in taking up his father's throne. But considering the subject can be uncomfortable even in the best written pieces on slavery, I won't bring up slavery without OOC discussion. But if that is something you're cool with exploring, please know that I am completely open to characters being critical anything they hear, including being critical of Clive himself, what he might say, or how he might talk about his home nation. If you've read all that and decided this character simply isn't for you even if those topics don't come up, that's perfectly fine!
